Godmanchester - A Top Ten Cambridgeshire Village

Set within tranquil countryside, beside the River Great Ouse, Godmanchester is just a couple miles away from Huntingdon town railway station providing excellent transport links to Central London. It is a top location for commuters who prefer to settle in the peaceful countryside, but with Cambridge just a short drive away via the new bypass, you can easily enjoy the liveliness of the nearby city. 

Godmanchester has a ‘real sense of community’ making it such a desirable place to live and is praised for its friendly and welcoming reputation. Approximately 8000 people currently reside in this ancient village which dates back to the 13th century, with early evidence it was once a Celtic Settlement. History is cherished within the substantial number of listed buildings which exhibit great architectural interest and contribute to the village’s characterful charm. A number of timber-framed houses date back to the 17th century and a total of 116 properties are listed as Grade II. 

The surrounding green spaces offer scenic views and beautiful countryside nature trails. The riverside location creates the ideal spot for wildlife to flourish making Godmanchester a great place for nature spotting. Walking across the idyllic white framed Chinese Bridge, you arrive at Godmanchester’s Recreation Ground. This greenland is perfect for dog walking, having picnics in the summertime and there are two play parks for children to enjoy. Portholme Meadow is situated just behind and is recognised as a Special Area of Conservation which protects the site from any future development plans. These open spaces create ideal walking routes connecting  the nearby villages such as; Brampton, Houghton, St Ives and The Hemmingfords. Within the village itself you can find; The Parish Church of St Mary, a Baptist Church and the reputable St Anne's C of E Primary School. and Bridge Academy. There is a dentist, chemist and doctors surgery and a couple of local shops for essentials. A number of pubs and restaurants offer a great selection for food and drinks spots including a couple of cafes too, such as The Grand Piano and Pinnies Tea Room. The Exhibition is a popular family run pub, restaurant and bar with a cosy open fire in the winter months and an enclosed garden for summer socialising. Fifteenth century gastropub, The White Hart, offers a contemporary menu with highly rated reviews. The Black Bull and The Royal Oak further contributes to the selection of pubs within the village, supporting the sociable and inviting community atmosphere.

Events hosted throughout the year in Godmanchester provide plenty of opportunities to get involved in village life for all ages. From ‘Picnic in the Park’, to ‘Family Fishing Day’, Easter Egg hunts and many more festive celebrations. Godmanchester’s Community Association organises a timetable of all the activities and can be viewed online here. The village also has a variety of sports teams to join and a football club - Godmanchester Rovers FC.
